School Wide Positive Behaviour Support: Explicit Teaching for Engagement and Learning

Why do we need to teach behaviour expectations?

“If a child doesn’t know how to read, we teach”

“If a child doesn’t know how to swim, we teach”

“If a child doesn’t know how to multiply, we teach”

“If a child doesn’t know how to drive, we teach”

“If a child doesn’t know how to behave, we… teach?.. punish?”

“Why can’t we finish the last sentence as automatically as we do the others?”

At Verney Road School we use School Wide Positive Behaviour Support.

School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a framework that helps us to plan and implement practices across the whole school, to improve educational and behaviour outcomes for all students.

The SWPBS framework is founded on a positive approach to whole school well being with targeted approaches for students with higher levels of need.
